Breckenridge Distillery is the highest altitude distillery in the United States — and arguably in the world — operating at nearly 9,600 feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado. Founded in 2008 by Dr. Bryan Nolt, a former radiologist whose Breckenridge fly-fishing trip in 2007 sparked the career change that produced one of the most award-winning craft American bourbons of the modern era, Breckenridge Distillery sits at the corner of Airport Road and Park Avenue in Breckenridge, walking distance from the town's ski lifts and main downtown commercial district.

The high-altitude location is more than a marketing hook — it produces measurable production differences that show up in the final whiskey. The super-dry Rocky Mountain air drives a significantly higher angel's share (the annual evaporation loss from aging barrels) than Kentucky or Scotland — Breckenridge loses roughly 10-12% of barrel volume per year versus the 2-4% standard at sea level — which means the whiskey concentrates faster and develops mature-age flavor characteristics in less calendar time. The trade-off is meaningfully higher production cost per finished bottle: Breckenridge effectively pays for 4-5 years of aging in finished spirit value for every 2-3 calendar years a barrel sits in the rickhouse.

The flagship Breckenridge Bourbon is a high-rye blended bourbon — sourced base whiskey blended with Breckenridge-distilled bourbon — bottled at 86 proof, one of the most decorated craft American bourbons by competition medal count over the past decade. The expanded range covers Breckenridge Bourbon (the flagship), Breckenridge Distiller's High Proof Blend (105 proof, the higher-tier release), Breckenridge American Single Malt Whiskey, Breckenridge Spice Rum, Breckenridge Bitter (an aperitif), Breckenridge Vodka, and a range of seasonal and limited bottlings including the popular PX Sherry Cask Finish Bourbon and the Breckenridge Aquavit (one of the only American aquavits at commercial scale).

The Breckenridge visitor experience is a destination in itself for visitors to the surrounding ski-and-summer-tourism corridor. The distillery runs daily tours through the working production floor and the on-site rickhouses, with tastings that include the full Breckenridge range. The on-site Breckenridge Distillery Restaurant — a serious chef-driven kitchen that pairs the distillery's spirits with mountain-cuisine cooking — has become one of the highest-rated restaurants in the entire town, with a tasting-menu format that walks diners through coordinated food-and-spirits pairings across multiple courses. For visitors to Breckenridge for skiing, summer hiking, or any of the year-round mountain-town tourism, the distillery is a natural full-evening stop.
