Copper & Kings American Brandy Company is the Louisville distillery that decided to bet the entire operation on American brandy rather than bourbon — a categorical contrarian move in a state where bourbon is essentially the industrial religion. Founded in 2014 by Joe and Lesley Heron in Louisville's Butchertown neighborhood, the distillery occupies a converted industrial building at 1121 East Washington Street, a half-mile from downtown, and remains one of the only American distilleries focused exclusively on craft brandy production at meaningful scale.

The Herons came to American brandy with deliberate intent — Joe had previously co-founded the Crispin Cider brand before selling to MillerCoors in 2012, and brought beverage-industry experience and a willingness to ignore the bourbon path most Louisville distillery founders take. The Copper & Kings stills are three pot stills imported from Scotland — Lottie, Sara, and Magdalena — each named after a "woman of substance" connected to the founders' history. Distillation runs on a single-batch model, with each brandy distillate held in oak (often used bourbon barrels for the American Brandy line, French oak for the Spanish-style Cordials) for varying maturation periods.

The product range is genuinely unusual for a Kentucky distillery: American Craft Brandy (the flagship, distilled from non-Kentucky apple cider and aged in used bourbon barrels), Floodwall Apple Brandy, American Craft Absinthe (one of the few US-produced absinthes that uses traditional Pontarlier-region recipes), and Destillaré orange curaçao for cocktail use. The Cocktail Cherries — slow-cooked, brandy-infused, used as a Manhattan garnish or just eaten by the spoonful — became an unexpected hit in cocktail-program circles nationwide and are now distributed in over 40 states.

Constellation Brands acquired Copper & Kings in 2018, taking a majority stake while Joe and Lesley Heron remained on as operators and brand ambassadors. The Butchertown distillery still runs its full visitor program and operates an on-site rooftop bar — one of the few rooftop bars in any American distillery — with views toward downtown Louisville and live music programming in the warm months. It's the natural pairing for a Louisville bourbon-trail visitor who wants to step out of the bourbon-and-bourbon-and-bourbon rotation for an afternoon.
