The Bardstown Bourbon Company, LLC

Bardstown Bourbon Company is the modern Kentucky distillery built around an idea most legacy producers wouldn't touch: openly admit you contract-distill for other brands, then make that transparency the brand. Opened in 2014 on a 100-acre campus on the southern edge of Bardstown, BBCo was the first new Kentucky distillery in over 100 years to open as a fully integrated production-and-visitor experience from day one — and the 14th distillery to join the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the first with an on-site full-service restaurant, bar, and vintage spirits library.

The contract-distilling program is the strategic engine. BBCo currently produces custom-spec bourbon and rye for over 50 client brands — the labels stay confidential, but the work has been credited as supplying many of the most-praised modern small-batch bourbons on the market. The wholesale "Collaborative Distilling Program" lets clients spec their own mash bill, yeast strain, entry proof, and barrel selection rather than choosing from a fixed contract menu. Initial capacity at opening was 1.5 million proof gallons per year; multiple expansions have lifted that to roughly 6.8 million proof gallons today, with on-site warehousing for 185,000+ barrels.

Steve Nally, a 40-year industry veteran and the former master distiller of Maker's Mark, joined BBCo as master distiller and is the public face of the production side. The own-brand product range is built around the Discovery, Origin, Fusion, and Collaborative series — Discovery is the small-batch blend of sourced whiskeys carrying the BBCo label, Origin shifts to fully BBCo-distilled releases, Fusion blends sourced and BBCo whiskeys to demonstrate finishing technique, and Collaborative pairs BBCo bourbon with finishes from other producers (notably Plantation Rum, Phifer Pavitt Cabernet, and Foursquare).

The Bardstown campus visitor experience leans into the transparency angle: distillery tours show real production happening in real time, the bar program is treated as seriously as the distillation, and the Bottle & Bond restaurant has won regional dining awards on its own merits. It's the most modern, least mythologized stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and increasingly the one industry professionals recommend first.
