Location
Cooperstown Distillery is the Otsego County, New York craft operation that turned the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame into a meaningful American craft spirits destination — and the first and only distillery in Otsego County. Founded in October 2013 by longtime restaurateur and 45-year food-and-beverage industry veteran Eugene "Gene" Marra (a New York City native who relocated to the Cooperstown area before launching the distillery), Cooperstown Distillery occupies a downtown Cooperstown facility within walking distance of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the Glimmerglass State Park, and the broader Cooperstown tourism corridor.
The baseball connection runs through the brand's entire editorial identity. Cooperstown is the legendary (if historically contested) birthplace of baseball, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame is the year-round tourism anchor that draws roughly 250,000 annual visitors to the small town of approximately 1,800 permanent residents. Marra built the distillery's product naming and packaging around the baseball heritage — the flagship line includes Spitball Whiskey, Beanball Bourbon, Doubleday's Double Play Whiskey, and other baseball-vocabulary-named expressions — which gives the brand a tourism-and-gift-shop product identity that almost no other American craft distillery can claim through historical accident of geography.
The product range covers Cooperstown Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey (the flagship — small-batch bourbon distilled from all-New-York-State grain, aged in new charred American oak), Spitball Whiskey (the brand's most-distributed product), Beanball Bourbon (a higher-proof small-batch expression), Doubleday's Double Play, Cooperstown Distillery Gin, Cooperstown Distillery Vodka, and a rotating range of seasonal and limited bottlings. The 100-proof Cooperstown whiskey received the "Liquid Gold" award from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible in both 2019 and 2020 — competition recognition that anchored the brand's serious-craft-spirits credibility independent of the baseball-tourism marketing identity.
In December 2020, Marra opened a second Cooperstown Distillery location — the Beverage Exchange on Broadway in Saratoga Springs — expanding the brand's retail and tasting-room footprint into the upstate New York Capital Region and Saratoga Springs tourism corridor. The Cooperstown main visitor experience runs daily tours through the production floor, the small on-site rickhouse, and a tasting room that integrates the baseball-themed branding throughout. For visitors building a Cooperstown Hall of Fame trip, the distillery is the natural craft-spirits anchor of the broader Otsego County tourism economy.
