Talnua Distillery is the Arvada, Colorado craft operation that holds a globally unique distinction: the first fully dedicated Single Pot Still whiskey distillery operating outside Ireland. Founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Patrick and Meagan Miller, Talnua exists to revive a category of whiskey production — Irish Single Pot Still — that had been almost entirely the exclusive domain of a handful of Irish producers (Midleton, Powers, Redbreast, Green Spot) for over a century. The Millers built Talnua specifically to bring this style to American shelves using Colorado-grown barley, traditional triple distillation, and the mixed-mash bill of malted and unmalted barley that defines the Irish style.
The origin story is direct and specific. Patrick and Meagan Miller fell in love with Single Pot Still whiskey on their 2011 honeymoon in a Galway pub, then spent the next several years researching and building toward the eventual Talnua launch. Patrick worked as a distiller at Stranahan's in Denver while developing the technical and commercial foundation for Talnua, with home distilling experiments starting in 2015 before the formal Talnua opening in 2017. The Arvada distillery at 5405 West 56th Avenue runs traditional triple distillation through hand-built pot stills, sourcing 100% Colorado-grown malted and unmalted barley for the mash bill — the technical signature that differentiates Irish Single Pot Still from other malt whiskey categories.
The 2024 World Whiskies Awards recognized Talnua's Bourbon Cask & Stave Series Single Pot Still American Whiskey as "America's Greatest Whiskey" — a category-defining win that established Talnua among the most decorated craft American whiskey operations of the past decade. The expanded product range now covers the Talnua Single Pot Still American Whiskey (flagship), the Bourbon Cask Series (single-cask bottlings finished in used Kentucky bourbon casks), Talnua Pot Still Cask Strength releases, and a small range of seasonal and experimental finishes.
The Arvada visitor experience runs through a working distillery floor where the pot still installation is the focal point — visitors can see the unusual three-still triple-distillation setup that Talnua uses for every batch. The on-site cocktail lounge serves the full Talnua range across both neat tasting flights and cocktail builds, and the location's proximity to downtown Arvada's restaurant cluster makes Talnua an easy half-day stop for visitors building a craft-distillery itinerary through the Denver Front Range. For anyone interested in the global geography of single-pot-still whiskey production, Talnua is genuinely the only American destination on that map.
