A consigliere is a counselor — the advisor in old Italian-American organized crime who tells you the truth when everyone else is telling you what you want to hear. It is a specific kind of intelligence: not flashy, not self-promoting, just honest and reliable when the stakes are high.

The name is on the nose for this cigar in the best possible way. The CAO Consigliere line is a series of blends designed as full-bodied smokes for different moods. The Soldato — the "soldier" of the collection — is the most approachable of the four variants and the one that best demonstrates what CAO was trying to accomplish with the concept: full-bodied tobacco with structural intelligence.

The wrapper is a dark Habano Jalapa, grown in Nicaragua, with the slightly rustic appearance that characterizes good Jalapa leaf — visible tooth, natural oil, a surface that shows the tobacco rather than hiding it. The binder and filler are a Nicaraguan and Honduran blend. Cold draw delivers dark earth, leather, and espresso. This is familiar territory for full-bodied Nicaraguan-influenced blends, but the quality of the opening is higher than the price would suggest.

First third lights easily and delivers exactly what the cold draw promised: espresso, dark earth, leather, and a black pepper note that starts from the back of the palate and works its way forward. The burn is true. The draw is excellent — easy, even, with a consistent temperature that stays manageable throughout the first third.

Second third: the dark chocolate note that was sitting under the espresso in the first third begins to emerge. This is the Soldato''s best moment — the development of complexity from a base that started well and builds organically rather than shifting abruptly. The leather from the Jalapa wrapper threads through everything, adding structure and keeping the complexity organized.

Final third brings the pepper back to the front, the earth deepens, and the finish closes with a medium-long complexity of espresso and dark earth. No harshness at the nub. The burn held true throughout.

At $13, the CAO Consigliere Soldato is the advisor you bring in when you want honest tobacco that delivers on its promises without drama. Pair it with Wild Turkey 101 or a heavy Scotch. It gives good counsel.
