Boozemakers
Hold the glass up to light. Note the color, clarity, and viscosity. Swirl gently and observe the legs — thicker, slower legs often indicate higher proof or age.
Bring the glass to your nose slowly. Start a few inches away and move closer. Breathe with your mouth slightly open. Don't just "sniff" — let the aromas come to you. Try to identify 3–5 distinct notes.
Take a small sip and let it coat your tongue. Notice where on your palate different flavors register: sweetness on the tip, bitterness at the back, spice on the sides. Add a few drops of water to open up new flavors.
After swallowing, pay attention to how long the flavors linger (the finish). A short finish fades in seconds; a long finish stays for a minute or more. Note which flavors persist and whether the finish is warm, dry, sweet, or spicy.
Score the spirit on balance, complexity, and enjoyment. Consider the value at its price point. There are no wrong answers — your palate is yours.
Circle or underline descriptors as you taste. Use these as a starting point — add your own.
