Our Verdict

Ten years of learning produced something that stands alongside much more prestigious full-bodied brands. The Decade earns its name and its price.

Rocky Patel''s origin story is one of the more unlikely in the cigar industry. Born in India, he moved to the United States, worked as a talent agent in Hollywood representing actors and directors, went to law school, and then — somewhere in the middle of a successful entertainment career — became obsessed with tobacco.

He started rolling cigars in the early 1990s, initially as a hobby, and was taken seriously by almost nobody. By the early 2000s, he had earned a seat at the table. By the mid-2000s, the Rocky Patel brand was appearing on "best of" lists. By the time the Decade was released, he had been in the industry for ten years and had something to prove to himself: that a decade of learning produced a cigar worth the anniversary.

The Rocky Patel Decade Toro is the result of that self-imposed test. A 6×52 toro using a rare Honduran Sumatra wrapper, Honduran binder, and a blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers. The wrapper is dark — a deep Colorado maduro — with natural oils and a texture that suggests the leaf was selected carefully. This is a full-bodied cigar wearing its ambition visibly.

Cold draw: dark earth, leather, and cocoa. The pre-light aromatics are excellent — complex and balanced, which is a useful indicator of quality. First light confirms it. The earth and leather arrive simultaneously, with the cocoa providing a sweetness that sits underneath everything and keeps the cigar from going too dark. The draw is smooth with a slight resistance that improves the smoke temperature.

Second third: espresso develops from the cocoa base. The pepper starts working in, black and measured, threading evenly through each draw. Dark chocolate joins the espresso in the second half of this third. The Honduran and Nicaraguan filler blend is contributing more to the complexity than I expected — there is a genuine interplay between the two terroirs here.

Final third deepens the leather, the earth turns mineral, and the dark chocolate and espresso carry the finish to a genuinely long close. Complex and structured to the end. No harshness. No need to put it down early.

At around $24, the Decade Toro asks you to take Rocky Patel seriously as a premium producer. It earns that ask. A decade of learning produced something that stands alongside much more prestigious full-bodied brands at a similar price. Pair it with Booker''s or a Four Roses Single Barrel. Give it the 75 minutes of respect it deserves.
