The Jack Daniel Distillery is worth the drive even if you only walk the grounds. Skip the tour, though, and you can leave Lynchburg without tasting a drop of Jack Daniel's, because the tours end in a tasting and Moore County has no bars.
We learned that the honest way. Our camera roll puts us at the distillery's visitor center at 3:53 PM on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, and on the Lynchburg town square by 4:25. We walked the grounds and the square. We didn't take a tour. It was still worth the trip, and the tour is the one thing we'd change.

What does a grounds-only visit to Jack Daniel's get you?
More than you'd expect, and less than the full experience. The first thing we read wasn't about whiskey. It was a sign on the visitor center lawn telling us to bring a valid ID, dress for an outdoor tour, and wear walking shoes. It also lists what stays in the car: backpacks, large bags, weapons, strollers and open containers. The whole property is tobacco-free, and that includes e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and vapes.

A few minutes away is the town square, where Jack Daniel's runs the Lynchburg Hardware & General Store. The distillery says the store has been on the square for more than 110 years, still under its old promise: "All Goods Worth Price Charged." Outside, a wooden rack holds nine barrel heads stamped Jack Daniel Distillery and Old No. 7. It's the photo everybody takes, and we took it too.

Inside the shops, the memorabilia goes well past t-shirts. There's an oversized black guitar covered in signatures, a lounge with a Chesterfield sofa under a wall-sized mural of Mr. Jack, and a Jack Daniel's jukebox glowing in the corner.

The best stop for a whiskey drinker is the barrel shop. Full-size barrels stand in rows with their heads branded "Jack Lives Here" or the Old No. 7 logo, each one tagged for sale. It's the closest a grounds-only visit gets to the production side of the operation.

Is the Jack Daniel's tour worth it?
Almost everyone we've heard talk about the place calls the tour a must-do, and after walking the grounds without one, we agree with them. Here's the part most people don't think about until they're standing on the square: the tasting is where the tour ends.
Jack Daniel's says Moore County has been dry ever since Prohibition. You can't order a drink at a bar or restaurant in Lynchburg. The distillery's White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the visitor center sells bottles, but its page doesn't mention tastings. We didn't ask on the day, so call ahead if that matters to you.
Put those two facts together and the tour becomes the reliable way to taste Jack Daniel's where it's made. Skip it, as we did, and you drive to the source of the world's best-known Tennessee whiskey and leave with a bottle you haven't tasted. Only guests 21 and over with a valid photo ID can sample.
Which Jack Daniel's tour should you book?
Pick by what you want in the glass. These are the current options and prices from jackdaniels.com, checked October 14, 2026. Fees include sales tax.
| Tour | Price | Length | What you taste | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jack Daniel Distillery Tour | $35 | 1.8 hours | Six Jack Daniel's samples | Offered daily. Under-21s can walk the tour but can't sample. |
| Bonded Tour | $55 | 2 hours | Jack Daniel's Bonded, Bonded Rye, Triple Mash | 21 and over. Includes a rocks glass or themed gift. |
| All About the Barrel | $75 | 2 hours | Single Barrel expressions, which may include barrel proof | 12 guests max. Daily at 10:50 AM and 2:50 PM CST, plus 12:55 PM Thursday to Sunday. Climbs a seven-story barrel house. |
| A Day at Jack | $160 | 5 hours | Assorted Jack Daniel's whiskeys | Adds lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's and a guided walk of Lynchburg. Once daily, 8 guests max. |
The math favors the basic tour. At $35 for six pours, it works out to under $6 a sample. The barrel tour costs more than twice as much, but it caps the group at 12 and pours whiskey you're less likely to find on a bar shelf back home.
What time should you get to Lynchburg?
Earlier than we did. The General Store on the square is open 10 AM to 5 PM CST every day except seven holidays. The latest scheduled barrel tour starts at 2:50 PM and runs two hours, so it ends minutes before the store closes. The standard tour's start times aren't listed on its page, so check when you book or call the distillery at (931) 759-6357.
That puts the real deadline in the early afternoon. We rolled in around 4 PM and didn't tour. Arriving by early afternoon leaves room for a two-hour tour and the square before it closes. If an afternoon tour is your only option, shop the square first and tour second. Lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's Restaurant on the square is $29.95 plus tax per adult, and the distillery highly recommends reservations.
What should you bring, and what should you leave in the car?
The sign on the lawn and the distillery's FAQ agree on the essentials:
- Bring: a valid photo ID, walking shoes, and clothes for an outdoor walk. The FAQ says tours are partly outdoors, with walking and stairs.
- Carry small: clutches, purses, fanny packs and wallets are allowed. Backpacks and camera bags aren't allowed on tours.
- Leave behind: strollers, which aren't permitted on tours. The FAQ recommends baby carriers instead.
- Phones and cameras: allowed on tours, but restricted in certain areas. Professional photography needs written permission.
- Tobacco: none anywhere on the property, including vapes and smokeless tobacco.
The distillery doesn't publish how far the parking lot is from the tour start. Sort out your bag before you leave the car, not at the door.
What we'd do differently
- Book a tour online before leaving home. The FAQ says crowds peak Friday through Sunday and on major holidays.
- Get to Lynchburg by early afternoon, not 4 PM.
- If the tour runs late, hit the square and the barrel shop first.
- Pack a fanny pack, an ID and walking shoes, and leave the backpack in the car.
- If timing allows, book lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's and make it a full day.
The verdict
Worth the trip, even grounds-only. The square, the General Store and the barrel shop make a good hour for any whiskey fan, and the barrel rack photo is a rite of passage. But the grounds are the warm-up. The tour is the visit, and in a dry county it's also your tasting. Next time, we're booking it.
