Our Verdict

The Botanist is the thinking drinker's gin — 22 botanicals hand-foraged on Islay, slow-distilled at Bruichladdich, and bottled at a characterful 46%. It is the most complex gin in this lineup and a genuine sipping gin. The premium is real, and so is the depth.

How We Score

Every spirit is tasted blind in a Glencairn glass across multiple sessions on different days. We score on a 100-point weighted scale, recording notes before the label is revealed to eliminate brand bias.

Layered character and uniqueness

From Bruichladdich — the Islay distillery better known for peated single malt — comes the most cerebral gin in this lineup. The Botanist is built on nine classic gin botanicals augmented by twenty-two more hand-foraged on the island of Islay: mint, chamomile, wildflowers, gorse, heather, and more. It is slow-distilled in a quirky Lomond still nicknamed "Ugly Betty," and it tastes like nowhere else.

The nose alone rewards patience: juniper and citrus up front, then mint, chamomile, and a green, herbaceous, almost windswept complexity. If you love Islay's whisky heritage, there is a real sense of place here.

On the palate

Bottled at a generous 46%, The Botanist is full, layered, and slow to reveal itself — juniper, menthol, herbs, florals, citrus, and earthy botanicals that keep unfolding across a long, warming finish. This is not a gin to bury under tonic; it is a gin to sip, or to build a contemplative Martini around.

The verdict

The Botanist is a premium gin, and it earns it with genuine complexity rather than a gimmick. It is the most sophisticated bottle in our gin lineup and the natural choice for the drinker who wants to slow down and think about what is in the glass. If Tanqueray is the everyday benchmark, The Botanist is the special-occasion showpiece.
