Every standard outlet in a home garage has to be GFCI-protected under the National Electrical Code, and a garage bar runs more plug-in appliances than any other room in the house: fridges, a kegerator, TVs, lights. Plan the power before the bar. Below are 15 garage bar ideas, from one bay to the whole building, then the two rules and the bottles.
1. Roll-Up Door Indoor-Outdoor Bar
Put the counter right where the garage door opens and the driveway becomes the patio. It's the garage bar's best trick.
2. Workbench Bar
A heavy workbench is already counter height for standing. Swap a pegboard row of tools for bar tools and you're done.
3. Tailgate Bar
A salvaged pickup tailgate bolted to the wall makes a bar top with a story. Salvage yards and online marketplaces sell them by make and year.
4. Sports Bar Garage
Two TVs, a long bar and a fridge. The garage is where game day goes when the living room is too small.
5. Diamond Plate Industrial Bar
Diamond-plate steel and a concrete top suit a garage and survive anything you spill or drop on them.
6. Vintage Gas Station Bar
A restored pump, enamel signs and a checkerboard floor. It's the theme that fits a garage better than any other.
7. Garage Pub with a Dartboard
Dark wood, a dartboard and a kegerator. A garage pub is the easiest theme to get right.
8. Pallet Wood Garage Bar
A weekend and a stack of pallets. Sand the top and seal it, because raw pallet wood soaks up every spill.
9. Beer Fridge and Kegerator Wall
A row of glass-door fridges and a kegerator turns one wall into the bar. Give every fridge its own outlet; see the wiring section below.
10. Pegboard Garage Bar
A rolling tool chest makes the best garage bar cabinet. The drawers fit bar tools exactly.
11. Car Lover's Garage Bar
The car stays parked and becomes the art. Spotlights on the car, a short bar along the side wall, chairs facing the hood.
12. Detached Garage Bar
A detached garage is a separate building, so it's the easiest one to turn into a bar or a cigar room. See our cigar lounge ideas for that version.
13. Half Garage Bar (Car Still Fits)
Take one bay of a two-car garage and keep parking in the other. A rug and a counter line define the bar side.
14. Epoxy Floor Lounge Bar
An epoxy floor makes a garage feel finished and wipes clean after a party. Finished walls and a sofa do the rest.
15. Garage Tiki Bar
Bamboo, a thatch awning and tiki mugs. Stock a funky Jamaican rum like Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaica Rum (90/100) for the drinks.
Do Garage Outlets Need to Be GFCI?
Yes. The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70, section 210.8) requires GFCI protection for 125-volt, 15- and 20-amp receptacles in a home's garage. That covers the fridge, the kegerator and the TV outlets, not just the one by the door.
A bar adds several appliances to a room that was wired for a garage door opener and a light. Have an electrician check what the circuit can carry before you add a second fridge or a kegerator.
Can You Turn an Attached Garage into a Bar?
Yes, but the wall it shares with the house is a fire separation. The International Residential Code, section R302.6 requires an attached garage to be separated from the house by at least ½-inch gypsum board on the garage side. Cutting a pass-through window, adding a doorway or removing drywall from that wall to make the bar feel connected to the house can break that separation.
Keep the shared wall intact, and talk to your building department before you change it or convert the garage into living space. Your jurisdiction may use a different code edition, and a permit for the conversion will show what applies. A detached garage (#12) doesn't share a wall with the house, which is one reason it's the simplest build.
What to Stock in a Garage Bar
A garage bar gets hard use, so stock bottles that score well and won't hurt to pour freely. These are the bottles in our reviews scoring 85 or higher whose price tops out at $35:
- Tanqueray London Dry Gin (gin): 91/100, $20-28
- Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaica Rum (rum): 90/100, $28-35
- Plymouth Gin (gin): 90/100, $28-35
- Wild Turkey 101 (bourbon): 88/100, $22-30
- Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whisky BiB (rye): 86/100, $22-30
