Barbados at its most elegant — a pot-and-column blend of 8-to-15-year rums, refined and dry where others are sweet.

Our Verdict

Mount Gay XO is the elegant, food-friendly face of aged rum — a pot-and-column Barbadian blend that drinks like a fine aged spirit without the funk or the sugar. The reference point for the refined end of the category.

How We Score

Every spirit is tasted blind in a Glencairn glass across multiple sessions on different days. We score on a 100-point weighted scale, recording notes before the label is revealed to eliminate brand bias.

Layered character and uniqueness

If Jamaica is funk, Barbados is finesse, and Mount Gay is the island's flag-bearer — the oldest continuously operating rum brand in the world, with roots to 1703. The XO Reserve Cask blends pot-still and column-still rums aged between eight and fifteen years in ex-bourbon oak, and it shows exactly why the Bajan style is the benchmark for elegant, dry-leaning aged rum.

The nose is polished and generous: ripe banana, toffee, vanilla, dried apricot, and warm oak spice. Where the high-ester Jamaicans shout, Mount Gay composes — every note is in its place.

On the palate

This is where the XO earns its keep. It is balanced and refined — banana and caramel up front, then almond, dark fruit, and gentle spice over a clean oak spine. Crucially, it is not sweetened into submission the way many crowd-pleasers are; it finishes long, smooth, and pleasingly dry. It is a rum you can hand to a Scotch drinker without apology.

The verdict

Mount Gay XO is the elegant end of our rum spectrum — less wild than the Jamaicans, more honest than the dosed sippers. It is a touch pricier than Appleton 12, and worth it for the polish. If you want to understand why Barbados sets the standard for refined rum, start here.
